Overwhelmed with Clutter? Don't know where to start? Start Small.

Updated: Sep 24

Many of our clients love living in an organized home they just get "stuck" and have trouble seeing a way through the clutter. It starts out innocently with toys children have outgrown, a stack of mail that needs to be sorted, or an overcrowded pantry. Eventually, the situation becomes too "big" or the time needed to organize is too daunting.

The area that is most stressful to you can be anywhere in your home. It can be the refrigerator, a drawer, a playroom, or a bedroom. Sometimes you just need to get started and small areas are a great place to begin.

Here are some small spaces that will give you some quick "wins".

  • Start with a small area like a drawer. Pull the items out of the drawer, wipe it down, add a drawer divider or two, throw out or donate what you no longer need or have multiples of, and return items to the drawer. Congratulations! You're done!

  • Start with an area that isn't particularly emotional and doesn't require a lot of decision-making. A laundry room is a good, small space to organize with a pretty big payoff once you know where everything is located and the items you don't need are removed.

  • Start with a food or spice cabinet. This may take more time than the previous two but you may be surprised how much room you have once you dispose of expired food and spices.

  • Start with a refrigerator drawer or the refrigerator door. Remove items, check expiration dates, wipe down, and place items back in the drawer or door.

We hope you find these starting points helpful and encourage you to declutter even just one space. You've got this!
